Chemical indicator types: choosing by purpose

Understand the role of indicator types and the questions to ask before specifying a monitoring product.

EEP Type 1 Steam Process Indicator Label

What does the type number mean?

Types describe purpose, not a quality ranking. Type 1 distinguishes process exposure; Type 2 serves specific tests. Type 3 responds to one critical variable, Type 4 to two or more. Type 5 integrates critical variables; Type 6 is cycle-specific. See the STERIS classification reference below.

Write a useful purchasing brief

A useful enquiry names the sterilization method, intended monitoring point, sterilizer model, cycle identifier and packaging system. Ask for the exact product instructions and endpoint interpretation. Keep the model code in your purchasing record so that a visually similar label is not substituted without review.

Keep the evidence connected

An indicator result is one part of the process record. Link it to the load and the other required monitoring results. A colour change alone does not establish sterility; CDC describes complementary physical, chemical and biological monitoring.
